Bourbon and Boxwood, the name, hearkens to George Washington's success as a distiller and Mary Washington's love of boxwood gardens. Bourbon and Boxwood, the event, a spirited garden party with live music, plentiful food, drink, auction, and great guests, is also an outstanding way to support all five historic properties and their educational programs financially. At this year’s Bourbon and Boxwood celebration, we are deeply honored to recognize Gail Braxton for her remarkable legacy and steadfast devotion to our museums. For more than forty years, Gail has embodied the very spirit of our institution—motivating volunteers, stewarding our museums and collections, and passionately championing the transformative power of history and culture. Her vision and vitality have touched every facet of our organization, leaving a lasting impact on staff, visitors, and volunteers alike.

Today, Gail remains actively engaged, generously volunteering her time on several committees and continuing to fulfill our mission with the same passion and purpose that defined her earlier years of service. As we lift our glasses in tribute, we celebrate not only her decades of dedication but also the enduring influence she created. Gail’s contributions are woven into the very fabric of our story—they haven’t just preserved our past, they’ve helped define it.

Washington Heritage Museums is funded by donations, sponsorships, grants, memberships, and museum admissions. WHM does not receive ongoing city, state, or federal funds.
