Homeschool History Day

Washington Heritage Museums invites homeschool families with students ages 6 and up to enjoy immersive, educator-led tours at our three 18th-century historic sites. In celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary, students and educators may visit one, two, or all three museums for just $2.50 per person, per museum. Interpreters wearing period attire will engage with students as they explore different facets of colonial life, offering a glimpse into Revolutionary-era Fredericksburg, Virginia.

EXPLORE OUR HISTORIC SITES

Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop

On this exciting tour, students will uncover the secrets of colonial medicine. They’ll dive into the life of Dr. Hugh Mercer—a Revolutionary War hero, skilled doctor and close friend to George Washington—and see strange and surprising remedies used to treat patients in early America. From herbs to leeches and curious tools, this guided tour brings history and science together in a way that sparks imagination and curiosity. Students will also explore the medicinal garden with our WHM gardener, Ian Bugay (weather permitting). PLEASE NOTE: 18^th-century medical practices may not be suitable for sensitive students.

Rising Sun Tavern

Built around 1760 for Charles Washington, George's youngest brother, this building became the Golden Eagle Tavern in 1792 and later the Rising Sun Tavern. This engaging tour offers students a glimpse into a new nation through the eyes of travelers, townspeople, and tavernkeepers. Young visitors will hear fascinating tales of daily life and explore how taverns served as social hotspots of their time. Along the way, they will uncover the roles taverns played in news-sharing, community building, and the spirit following the Revolutionary War. Students will also learn and play 18th century garden games in the back courtyard (weather permitting).

Mary Washington House

George Washington bought this frame house on Charles Street for his mother, Mary, so she could be closer to family during her later years. This tour allows students to gain unique insights into the life and legacy of Mary Ball Washington and the Washington family. Young historians will explore colonial-era furnishings, household items and the outdoor open-hearth kitchen to understand life in colonial Virginia and make connections with their own modern-day experiences. Students can also take part in a special "History Hunt" to uncover and learn about interesting artifacts throughout the house and garden.

SCHEDULE AND LOGISTICS

• Students and homeschool educator adults must both purchase tickets and may attend one, two, or all three museum tours offered at the following times: Tour 1 - 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Tour 2 - 11:15 a.m. to Noon, Tour 3 - 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
• Time is built in for lunch between noon and 1 p.m.
• Families are welcome to bring a bagged lunch and eat at the picnic tables/benches behind the Rising Sun Tavern or on the porch of the Mary Washington House.
• Water will be provided.
• All students must be accompanied by an adult (no drop-offs please).
